The Atoma 140 came in the mail today. I’ll try it out on a few knives and let you guys know the results.by Ryan Nafe - General Sharpening
Has anyone used the Centofante 3? I always thought it looked like a decent EDC knife with its blade shape, pretty neutral handle, and the deep hollow grind on 2mm stock.by Ryan Nafe - General
The Cold Steel 4 Max Scout, AUS-10, is at 60 HRC.by Ryan Nafe - General
QuotecKc (Kyley Harris) 440 offers better corrosion, AUS better toughness at the same strength In that case I think I’m happy to have the AUS-10 over the 440C. I think the knife is coming in the mail tomorrow, so I’ll be able to do an HRC test on it soon. Tomorrow or Friday for sure.by Ryan Nafe - General
It’s a little different from 440C, having quite a bit less chromium, less molybdenum, and a small amount of vanadium. Which is different enough to make it more different from 440C than it is from AUS-8, so it’s not quite a good comparison.by Ryan Nafe - General
After ordering the 4 Max Scout in AUS-10, I was thinking about what makes it different to AUS-8. According to the manufacturer Aichi, here’s the compositional difference: Composition of the two: For reference of the alloys, the top slot in the chart: It has twice the Manganese, and about 30% more Carbon. The trouble is that I actually don’t quite understand how that wouldby Ryan Nafe - General
This is similar to what I’m gonna try using (this summer) for a backpacking/bugout bag tarp: plastic painters’ drop cloths. Inexpensive, relatively lightweight, completely wind and waterproof. It should make a really excellent barrier layer in a shelter. Natural materials for the bulk of the structure, and the plastic drop cloth for a wind/water/weather barrier that’s much better than just pine bby Ryan Nafe - Prepping/Survival/Bushcraft
Either that or the placement/fitment of it isn’t correct. It’s a big problem though, impacting the edge pretty badly in that spot.by Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
Big problem discovered with the SR1: The edge is making hard contact with the leaf spring that operates the lock, as well as some contact with the backspacer near the butt of the handle. Not good.by Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
Midway USA has a number of Cold Steel knives on pretty steep discounts right now, just an FYI for everyone. I ordered a 4 Max Scout, after tax and with free economy shipping it was $67.50, for that price I had to try it.by Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
QuoteRyan Nafe The Benchmade S90V skinning knife has a few inconsistencies in the edge and the primary grind is actually lopsided, one side of the 12 DPS edge is about twice the length of the other, it’s pretty bad. This isn’t true, as it turns out. Here’s what’s really going on: The angle I measure during setup is when the stone and the edge have no wear on them. So, a couple updates: - The Boride CS-HD 150 is soft enough to be easily flattened/reconditioned on my 10x4 DMT XC plate. - The angle control of the Edge Pro, in combination with the ease of using low pressures, makes it unbelievably easy to get extremely sharp edges. The Chief XHP right now, after the 3-step process that ended with the Spyderco Medium Ceramic, is truly sharp. Push cby Ryan Nafe - General Sharpening
Yeah the cowboy-action and fast draw stuff is pretty impressive. For me, the appeal to the Wrangler Birdshead was largely the short barrel and the birdshead grip that makes the gun pretty easy to fit in a jacket pocket. A holster really would be good too, but it’s very safe to carry loaded without a holster and will fit in the pockets of both of my fall and winter jackets, which are a Columbia Poby Ryan Nafe - Firearms
I don’t like ultralight rifles. They’re more difficult to hold on target, the increased recoil requires perfect shooting technique, and the very thin barrels get very hot very quickly.by Ryan Nafe - Firearms
For simple steels, nothing really compares in efficiency to the Norton India line. Even a heavily damaged or butterknife-dull edge can be completely restored and sharpened in a minute or two. Cut the apex off, lean on it to shape it, cut the apex off again, and make some light passes at a slightly higher angle until it’s sharp enough. Much much faster than doing that with a diamond plate and withby Ryan Nafe - Product Review/Feedback
Yeah the triad lock. With an oversized stop pin, too. ???? Edit to add, the “????” Is what the system defaults to when it doesn’t understand the emoji input.by Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
The things I like about diamonds are these: - They stay flat - They’ll cut all steel types without issue, even at low pressure - They’re a very good option for apexing the edgeby Ryan Nafe - Product Review/Feedback
It checked at 57.5 HRCby Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
Yup! Haha exactly.by Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
This looked like an interesting knife just because of the rather extreme stock thickness and lock strength. It’s not very expensive, I like 8Cr13MoV just fine, so I figured I’d buy one. I’ll check the HRC later tonight: Stock thickness is 0.190” and the edge is a uniform 0.035”, so I don’t see how it’s really possible to break the blade or ripple the primary grind, the durabilityby Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
Oh come on, just fan the hammer while hip-shooting and you’ll do fine, all the totally real cowboys did it. Really though it might not be that bad, I was getting pretty good at the loading and unloading procedures by the end of the 100 rounds, and the gun was getting a lot smoother, too.by Ryan Nafe - Firearms
The action is rough, the trigger pull is pretty clean, the sights are adequate, and it’s small enough to fit in a jacket pocket while bumming around in the woods or hunting. For well under $300, it’s decent enough so far. And I really like the old single-action design, it’s fun and functional.by Ryan Nafe - Firearms
Took the Wrangler out for the first 100 rounds to see what’s up. Just shooting at cans offhand, nothing too serious, but it appears to work well enough because I could hit cans out to 15 yards.by Ryan Nafe - Firearms
I’m definitely no expert on them, but I’d be careful because that technology wasn’t used with modern high velocity stuff. I’d try to keep the velocity below 1,200 FPS.by Ryan Nafe - Firearms
I think I’ll end up making a shortish video on the ergonomics. It’s a little too complicated to easily convey through writing.by Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
For me, I’m keeping an eye out for any other large knives that would be a good comparison to the Chief. Police 4, Military, etc. I really miss having the Military around, it was a great one. I also want to get a serrated H1 fixed blade to keep on my canoe this year for fishing. Something to cut my anchor rope in an emergency. A serrated H1 blade would also probably make an excellent tool forby Ryan Nafe - General
I finally remembered to pick up a pine 1x4x4 last night. For about $3 it’s the best investment to make in terms of checking grip and handle ergonomics with knives. From light and detailed cuts to forces so high that not even the shoulder can push the knife through. Cutting ability can of course be checked also, but that requires fairly careful measurements and I prefer to just sort of zone out anby Ryan Nafe - New Knives, and New to You Knives
One thing I always remember is the series of observations that Cliff made when comparing a Mora at 10 DPS to other knives with a primary grind. The edge angle plays the greatest role in cutting ability when forces are relatively low, the primary grind only comes into play when high forces are used, whether by choice of the user or by necessity because of the material being cut. Yeah there are a lot of ways to see how much pressure it takes. Just gotta see what happens. Flatten it with the Cubitron if necessary.by Ryan Nafe - General Sharpening
