Millscale, i definately try to avoid any overtly thick knife to buy, now that im not a maker with equipment to reprofile the blades to my liking. i just reprofiled my sebenza to around 11dps and its a laser, sliced deep into my thumb now accidentally .. haha.. the very coarse venev diamond is the best i have used for thinning. its a powerhouse. i took a look at the photo of the victorinoxby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews
the nilakka was a shame. i think one of the problems there was using S30v as the steel combining that steel, its lower stability in fine apex plus the inherant expectation of edge burn and embrittlement at the apex from production grinds especially going so thin prob led to a bad review by many. Cliff reviewed it and after some resharpenings it was going very well. his main comment was thaby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews
QuoteMillscale what do you think of the Sentinel, I especially like the fact it is one handed opening, I really hate the nail nick and the stiff spring of my Pioneer when outside is freezing and my hands are aching the sentinal and their other one hand options are fantastic knives. the video is gone now, but when i was demonstrating lock strength on folders i destroyed a zero tolerance bby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews
QuoteRyan Nafe … comparing to a thinned out factory edge still too thick, which could not even attempt the bone without risk of injury Risk of injury meaning the force required was so high that it would be dangerous to do the cuts, right? Yes, exactly this. the more force you need to add to the cut to make it happen, the more chance you will slip and all that energy will go somewhere unexpeby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews
the sentinel is a great knife. i like that one when it is thinned down too. Same knife. maybe the edge angle is a little thicker.. we are talking micro bevel angle imperceptible to the eye taking it up to 7-10dps Summary: Demonstrating the benefit and safety of a fine geometry over a thick geometry for working knives. the principal point being that typical factory edges are so thick and soby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews

i found an old video of one of my knives by John Davis. it was sent to him to try because he was doing a lot of testing and I and some others felt he'd never really tried a thin knife. the irony here is that its 5mm thick spine. but the edge is much thinner than any production knife. if you have a victorinox paring knife. it would be great to verify the hardness. in my videos i've said around 56, but these are presumptions that might be wrong, based on the swiss army knives. for all we know this could be updated. i'll do some researchby cKc (Kyley Harris) - General
QuoteMillscale I have been resurrecting some of my old videos that i'd made private. This one i wanted to post here purely as an example for any knifemakers who might end up seeing this. this is O1, triple tempered to 61rc +/- we live in an age where people are taking steels to extremes, going for harder and harder steels, higher and higher carbide content, all for edge retention.by cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews
QuoteRyan Nafe The Pro-Tech in 154CM tested at 59 HRC today. which is the advertised hardness. so i wonder if your spy27 is actually softer than intended.by cKc (Kyley Harris) - General
QuoteRyan Nafe The Native 5 ins SPY27 tested at 59 HRC today. Readings on the spine were the same as readings on the flats close to the edge, so I don’t think Spyderco is doing anything in the grinding that’s burning the steel. that seems a bit soft. BBB measured his para3 at 62hrc. but your RC tester may not be calibrated the same. so 59 on yours could easily be 60-61 on another machine. oby cKc (Kyley Harris) - General
i think that the spyderco K390 models coming out now are possibly one of the best examples of a "super steel' done right k390 thread spyderco forum people are getting 64-66rc on tests which falls in line with expected variances between different machines.. this is a steel that should be capable of going much much thinner than spyderco is taking it. its just too hard for a factby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews
QuoteRyan Nafe this depends on the steel to a degree, but in general its correct that cryo only needs to reach the temperature, and not hold the temperature. the cryo is converting retained austentite into martensite as an act of dropping to that temp. once it is done, holding it wont convert more. I missed the distinction between holding it there and just getting it there. Getting it thby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews

QuoteRyan Nafe The last point about holding the blade at the cryogenic temperature for longer not doing anything was kinda odd because he referenced the HRC number as evidence that it doesn’t do anything meaningful. Well the HRC number isn’t the point anyway, the point of cryogenic quenching is to lower the percentage of RA, not to gain Rockwell points. Quotejasonstone20 cKc, How does BTE thickness effect edge retention? That is what we are trying to figure out. by itself BTE isn't easy to identify as a reason. rather than worrying specifically about the bte, its more a case of thinking how much force is required to make one object penetrate another. the moment the apex makes contact with the material cut, you are starting to applyby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews
Edge Retention from edge angle the fact that lower edge angles increase edge retention is undeniable, and proven science, that is not in question and has not been for a very long time, no matter how many people want to do some small test that doesn't work well for them in a particular condition QuoteLarrin You can see that the initial cut length with a smaller angle is considerably higby cKc (Kyley Harris) - Video Reviews

I have just ordered a large inkosi also. I have my large sebenza in nz. I am keen to see how the design differences between the bushing sebenza and inkosi play out over time. I suspect that the lack of bushing may make a knife with more simplicity and greater longevity due to being able to make micro adjustments on the pivot over the years.by cKc (Kyley Harris) - New Knives, and New to You Knives
