When I get all my reloading caught up I plan to move my knife stuff back in. My first project is a new set of kitchen knives with optimized geometry. I want to use a steel soft enough to be filed. A repurposed Cold Steel machete would be about perfect. For those I want an edge thickness less than 0.005”.by me2 - Geometry
When I regrind my Delica again that is what I intend to do. I’d like the thickness at the top of the bevel to be less than 0.01”. That makes for easy sharpening and for that knife it won’t have any strength issues. I’m waiting for spring and I figure there is at least one more sharpening before it gets above my arbitrary limit of 0.025”by me2 - Geometry
AUS 10 vs 8 will have higher carbide volume and wear resistance. Hardness might be a point or three higher but not a huge jump. The potential is there to be higher but it all depends on heat treatment. Given the choice I’d take AUS 8 but if I liked the design I wouldn’t worry about it. If it were a knife for rough dirty cutting like opening sand bags or something 10 might last a little longerby me2 - General
I’m cautiously optimistic that I’ve found a good load for light cast bullets in my 30-30. I found some data from Lee using a common 223/5.56 powder which I happened to have. The powder I was using is very hard to find and also works extremely well in my 357 Magnum so I’d much rather use it where I know it works. I’ve only shot a few rounds and the longest distance was 50 yards. IF the load caby me2 - Firearms
I tried something similar for a while but was seduced by water stones and sold my coarse/fine combo stone. I really need to get another or maybe an actual Crystalon and a separate Fine India. I didn’t strop but got an arm shaving edge. It’s a less fussy process with just a combo oil stone.by me2 - General Sharpening
Looking forward to another Delica. I haven’t seen much on the high performance Delica since the original thread but I try to keep a lookout. I plan to further regrind my old Delica in the meantime as soon as the weather warms up.by me2 - General
Haven’t checked here in a while. It’s nice to see someone else had the same experience sharpening S110V. I’m planning on getting some diamond stones for finishing edges. That might justify revisiting S110V to see if I can get a better edge.by me2 - General
I handled a BLR in 308 that was very light. Light enough that I wasn’t too enthused about shooting it. I’d say it was about 4.5 to 5 pounds. I didn’t shoot it as it was in a gun shop. I think the Scandium framed 357 revolvers are lighter than I’d like but like you said only long guns. Some of the magnesium receiver rifles are interesting.by me2 - Firearms
That sounds like a great way to shoot my own hand. Do you ever watch the fast draw competitions? Last one I saw was the women’s championship. The winner drew, cocked, fired, and hit the target in 0.24 seconds. She got more done in that quarter second than I do before lunch.by me2 - Firearms
Try it with rapid fire limits (5 shots in 10 seconds). I’d be lucky to keep all 5 on a silhouette let alone in the 9 or 10 ring. I plan to try with some 38 Special loads in my Blackhawk but it won’t be pretty.by me2 - Firearms
If they are as good as the Heritage revolvers or better they should be a hoot. You’ll have to try some shorts and Colibri if you can find them.by me2 - Firearms
So far I’ve only found one reference manual for paper patching. It seems like there should be more. Castboolits.com has a fair bit of information in the form of forum answers but not much starting info. I’ve heard reports up to 2000 fps for 30-06 but have no way to evaluate that information.by me2 - Firearms
Anyone know anything about paper patched bullets? I’m hoping to solve my cast bullet troubles for 30-30 and paper patched bullets are something I want to try next.by me2 - Firearms
So I tried to zero my cast load with my 30-30 and I don’t have enough vertical adjustment, plus the load isn’t really accurate enough to justify pursuing. I think I’ll hold out for some Trailboss powder and some larger sized coated lead bullets. Marlin rifles evidently have a micro-groove barrel and often require cast projectiles be slightly larger than standard by 2 to 3 thousandths of an inchby me2 - Firearms
I need one. I’m probably way off in my estimates of velocity. I plan to start testing 38 Special loads soon. I have enough cases I can use and keep them all together. I want to get a good target load so I can use my 357 cases for the heavier stuff. I found a source for less expensive FMJ projectiles but the minimum order is 500. I don’t want to get that many and find out they don’t workby me2 - Firearms
I tried some 125 grain XTPs this weekend. The max velocity is listed at 1600 fps but that is from a 10” barrel. The max load was the most accurate, which seems a trend with either this caliber or this gun or both. It has a drastically different point of impact so much so that the first group was off paper on an 8” target at 25 yards. The rest were on target after an aim adjustment. The groupinby me2 - Firearms
The top picture looks best imho. The other seems more obvious.by me2 - Prepping/Survival/Bushcraft
I’m not sure why but I’ve been on a pistol testing spree. Most likely it’s due to the excellent results from my Blackhawk. I’m in the middle of a wide array of 9mm testing with 3 different powders and 5 different bullets. Should be fun. I also have a new powder to try for lighter 357 magnum bullets. Load data indicated over 1700 fps for a 110 grain Hornady XTP. That’s from a 10” barrel, butby me2 - Firearms
Spyderco makes some like this that are also more affordable than their standard kitchen line. They seem pretty good though they might be a little awkward for off board work.by me2 - General
I’m very tempted to see if I can get someone to hunt with the Blackhawk. I’m not really interested but I’m sure it can do it even if it’s just the wadcutters for rabbits.by me2 - Firearms
I’m very familiar with the Marlin 60 triggers. My older one is lighter. The iron sighted one might be 7 pounds or so. It’s heavy enough it becomes a problem when I was shooting the silhouette matches. I’m considering the MCARBO trigger spring kit for that one to lighten the trigger and maybe get it to reliably cycle CCI standard velocity. The older scoped one will run it no problem. Nothing wrong with a 10/22. Have you seen the zombie challenge on CRS Firearms on YouTube? 100 head shots at 100 yards on 2 targets separated by 4 feet. It was originally set for 100 seconds but no one has come close. It was also originally set for 22 LR, but people were having so much trouble he opened it to any caliber or platform. I would try it but all I have are tube fed 22s.by me2 - Firearms
My A4 clone is my favorite rifle right now so I'm sure I'd like the original A2 design. It's a very nice design, particularly once the initial issues were worked out. The difference between a rifle length gas system and a mid-length system is noticeable but it's not huge. Jumping from a rifle to a carbine length system is more of a difference, though I haven't shot a cby me2 - Firearms
Very impressive. HKs are generally out of my price range but they’re very nice. What ammo is that? I’m slowly searching for a 45 but in 1911 format for bullseye shooting.by me2 - Firearms
Looks promising. Yea the 158 grain XTPs are extremely accurate so far. I would like to try some 110s for the higher velocity and hopefully lower recoil. I’ll probably try some more cast bullets first though. I’m looking at some semi-wadcutters in the same weight but pushed slower or even loaded into 38 special cases. I have some of the powder shown as the most consistent in my manual, Wiby me2 - Firearms
I waffled about the 45 Colt or 357 version of the Blackhawk but availability and powder consumption pushed me to the 357. 45s make great big holes though. A 45 caliber wadcutter would leave window sized hole in paper and semi-wadcutters would be the same for game. Will the HK feed those odd shapes or is it round nose and hollow/flat point only?by me2 - Firearms
I was able to get to the range yesterday to test the 14.1 grain loads. 13.9 was very accurate but I had an interruption and pulled one shot. The other three were 0.8” apart. The 14.1 group was the most accurate so far with 4 shots at about 1.03”. Recoil from a rested position is becoming a problem so I likely won’t go any higher. Mechanically this pistol is more accurate than my Victory targby me2 - Firearms
I mean get what meets your requirements but that path should be well within a Mk262 style load’s capability. I zeroed my 20” rifle 3” high at 150 yards to do exactly what you’re talking about. Maximum point blank range for a 6” circle is just under 270 yards and that’s with my somewhat milder load moving at 2600 to 2650 fps. It might get 2700 from the 20” barrel. When doing your calculatiby me2 - Firearms
Typically my load manual shows the higher charges as the most potentially accurate. I have not seen pressure signs so far. I may keep going up. I had considered stopping but I have enough brass to go up two more increments to 14.1 grains. Hopefully I’ll get to the range once more before Christmas to try them.by me2 - Firearms
