This is hardened D2 steel. you can see the discoloration occurring on the steel being removed before its removed,
but its grinding so fast it doesn't have time to travel. also its on the handle. no biggie

Yes it heats up, but not as people would imagine, because the hollow wheel with that massive tread is designed to suck in huge volumes of air which cool the steel and the belt from behind where on a platen you'd be generating large amounts of friction heat.
