I found good cast loads in 357 Mag using 125 and 158 grain cast bullets. The 158 grain load is a handful though. It’s just 0.4 grains of powder below max charge and feels like it. The 125 grain load happens to use a minimum charge so it’s more tolerable.

That’s a pretty snazzy target set up you have there. 22 Long Rifle? Or one of the bench rest calibers?

I still need to confirm the cast loads for my 30-30 but the W231 powder and H335 load combined with the 135 grain Acme Bullet appears to be a winner. I also started testing cast bullets from Gallant Bullets in my 357 Magnum. So far I have a very accurate 38 Special load and will finish testing for a magnum load hopefully this weekend. That has been a longer journey though. Had a couple that l

I’ve heard some good endorsements about the Mako from knowledgeable people lately, but have not tried one myself.

You’ll have a tough time defining that hardness for just one steel unless you also fairly narrowly define the use as well. Also I don’t think the torsional toughness test are more important but I do think they’re more repeatable and consistent. Charpy testing higher hardness steels has a lot of scatter in the data.

I haven’t really looked into Kimbers except a couple 1911s I thought might fill my need for a 45 caliber target pistol. By accident all my carry pistols have been S&W. I did get a Ruger used but it’s very used, like 40 years old and purely a recreational gun.

Unfortunately no. Sounds interesting though.

It’s pretty entertaining. The last one was interesting. I was first and last since I was the only one.

The rifle range used for this competition has been closed for construction for a couple months. I just saw it has reopened so I’ll likely try again in June. I finally have the iron sights on my Henry set so I may use that.

Yes this is for my 336 in 30-30. This load is fairly accurate, grouping about 1.25” at 50 yards. As long as I don’t get any leading I’ll be good. There was still a little last time I cleaned the barrel but it’s very possible the first time I tried cast left enough lead that I was still cleaning that out. I’m going to try some Missouri Bullet Company 135 grain cast bullets too. They are sized

I finally tumbled to the need for a sight with enough adjustment to zero with these cast bullets. I ordered a Williams receiver sight. I plan to zero it as soon as I get some loads made up. It has adjustment ranges of 1/2” which translates to about 5 feet by 100 yards.

I was sort of hoping it would be less work but I guess not. I feel I have a full afternoon to regrind my Tern.

I need to regrind my Tern knife from Byrd. It’s a slip-it design that really needs a thinner bevel. Saber grinds seem easier than FFG blades unless I want a compound bevel halfway up the blade. Anyone have any tips on how to do this and not make the blade look like my eyes were closed?

Ok. That’s the stuff that just started showing up here. We had loads of the high velocity stuff but most places wanted $10/50 rounds. According to most sources that 1100 fps stuff shoots very well. I found a place selling CCI standard velocity 1070 fps loads for just under $10/100 so I stocked up on those. My Marlin really likes them. What scope do you have on the rifle?

Oh, and a 10/22 is on my short list. I feel like no collection is complete without one.

What’s the velocity on the Norma Tac-22? There are a couple types around. One is subsonic and the other is high velocity 22 @ 1250 fps or so. The high velocity is quite pricey here.

I got wrapped up in a freehand sharpening thread on another forum. I guess I’ll have to brush up on my skills. I rarely use just the Norton Economy stone anymore. It’s a great flattening stone for my water stones though.

Yes they are primarily for target shooting. They would also be a mean rabbit load or even squirrel if no choice was available. With supplies what they are I can load these for less than 25 cents each. That’s less than 55 grain FMJ 223 before the pandemic started at $5/20 in steel case Tula. Full power loads are unpleasant and use 5-6 times as much powder. I have some full power hand loads but

In my quest to shoot my 30-30 more for less $$$ I have found what I hope will be an accurate cast load. I’m still working through my supply of Acme 135 grain cast bullets. The old load using 223 powder (H335 for those into such things) used about 16 grains, or less than half a standard 30-30 load. Today I tried a pistol powder load with 5-6 grains of Winchester 231. I tried an array of loads

Oh. That’s unfortunate. Perhaps I’d be better served by a coarse/fine India stone or coarse Crystalon separate stone.

I’ve been looking for a replacement for my Norton Economy stone. I’ve relegated it to water stone flattening lately. The medium Crystalon side is enough for rebeveling?

I’m also considering a Wharnecliffe Endela. My Endura frightens the locals. Then again I’m also considering a Resilience so who cares about the locals.

I’ve often lamented the loss of availability of the F series tungsten finishing tool steels. Now I have another reason.

Oh right. I see now. I just told some people on another thread that holding a consistent angle isn’t really necessary. I can’t wait to see what that brings. People believe a lot of odd things about sharpening. It’s hard to get people to switch if what they’re doing works. I need to practice some freehand sharpening. I haven’t done any in a while.

I wouldn’t downgrade your ability just because you do it different. To use your example Christi does half to a third of the things above on just the one video I watched. A number of YouTube sharpeners are using very expensive and specific stones. Aren’t you using a pair of Norton’s or a combo stone?
