The Cold Steel Republic sure looks as if it is intended to compete directly with the stainless ESEE 4:
Cold Steel Republic
ESEE 4
The Republic:
- costs significantly more (rough numbers: $270 vs. $213 MSRP, and $220 vs. $150 on BladeHQ)
- presumably comes with a Cold-Steel-type warranty rather than an ESEE-type warranty, with all that entails.
It will be interesting to see whether it develops a following.

If I were to acquire a knife of this general description (which I occasionally consider doing), I would not want it to be made of a high carbide volume fraction steel, no matter who made the knife.
---
Still - if Cold Steel is going to try new things, I would much rather they try things like the Republic than things like the
Axis.
