Well, I got the Bowie Knife bug again, and i am adding to my collections. I just ordered the Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist in 52100 steel, and it is basically a Cold Steel Recon Scout, and the Recon Scout is basically a little shorter Cold Steel Trail Master:

Question about linking to YT videos (4 replies)

Is it possible for me to link to a YT video here without ending up with a miniature viewer embedded in the post?

The miniature viewer is fine sometimes, but is not desirable when I want to include a link to a YT video as a reference rather than as a central feature of a post.

I seem to end up with a miniature viewer no matter what I do:

Including the link as plain text results in a miniature viewer being displayed.

Including the link inside "link" tags, either with or without alt text, results in a miniature viewer being displayed.

Wrapping the above in "formatted code" tags does not help.

I wish there were a way around this. If there is please let me know.

Machete videos on the Web tend to be depressing and not particularly useful to the viewer. The following problems are typical:

- there is enthusiasm but not a lot of thought
- factory edge bevels are left unsharpened, even unapexed
- no attempt has been made to remove overheated steel
- there is no discussion of edge geometry or its effects
- there is little or no discussion of sharpness
- there is no comparative work, or the comparison is of questionable value due to the points above
- a person whacks randomly at brush or beavers away at a log, accomplishing little, except maybe some edge damage (remember that these are raw and probably overheated factory edges)
- the machete is declared good or bad (these are often product reviews) based on sketchy work that cannot support either conclusion
- the viewer does not learn much about the machete(s) shown, or cutting tools in general, or anything.

I could give examples of this but that is not the purpose of this thread.

Below I am going to post links to some videos that rise above this far enough to be informative or interesting somehow.

This is a video of a lawyer in the UK talking about knife laws there.

Knives featured:
Spyderco UK Penknife
Gerber Dime
French Corkscrew

The ridiculous things are that if you carry the Spyderco UK, it is classified as an offensive weapon, and then it is illegal, and also the fact they have a huge problem with knife crime now also, so the laws are not working. Funny how that works.

There are runners up for bad knife laws: New York City, Manila, Philipines.

Its bound to happen as people grab a steel, magnacut or otherwise we have seen it before.. my edge is chipping (too hard) my edge is rolling (too soft) when your edge is 0ver 60 and rolling, its likely not because its too soft when running 18dps

Larrin does an amazing break down to understand that heat-treat is not that simple, and is a fine balancing act of tradeoffs.

There is nothing better than when the person who comes up with a design or is part of the process actually sits and explains the rationale behind the knife, but then also does a bit of a demonstration of its values in real terms.

I've never seen this model before. but as a fisherman, this really does appeal to me a lot. the guard and all those other features, even the blade shape are all excellent for the purposes outlined. I've used framelocks etc fishing and they get dangerous and slippery..

my reground salt is an excellent fishing knife, but i think this siren looks more the part. it is already a flat grind and so would only need minor thinning on the edge. from a filletings perspective, that edge bevel is an advantage over a thinner grind so you dont go through the skin

Taking steel to its maximum potentials (11 replies)

I have been resurrecting some of my old videos that i'd made private.
This one i wanted to post here purely as an example for any knifemakers who might end up seeing this.

this is O1, triple tempered to 61rc +/-

we live in an age where people are taking steels to extremes, going for harder and harder steels, higher and higher carbide content, all for edge retention. but many are ignoring that geometry is the dominating factor in these things.

a similarly hard simple steel with a fine geometry will blow away a high carbide with a poor geometry, or at least equalize edge retention but give a superior cutting experience with lower force.

the best advantage to a harder stronger tougher steel is the ability to make it thinner and thinner while retaining enough stability to cut without damage.

this knife is distal tapered, not profile tapered. starting 0.040" down to 0.013" on the spine. the edge BTE can only be approximated. the edge itself is sub 0.002" but if looking at the height of a normal factory bevel of 15-20dps being 0.020 behind the edge.. well you cant even compare.
it goes from about 0,005 to 0.002" down the blade. bear in mind its only 0.013 at the spine.. the video is more clear. this is just a summary.

the point of putting this back is really to ask makers to challenge themselves. even on hard use outdoor blades, you can easily go 0.001 - 0.005" edges with full flat or convex grinds. you just increase the spine thickness to create the support structure, or reduce the grind height to ensure that you are getting 3-7dps primary bevels down to the 0.005" area.

Quick summary of the 2 videos.

i have hardly used the impinda since i bought it. mainly because where i live i just dont even need a folder. my apartment so small most of the time i grab a paring knife from the kitchen. lol

used the Venev diamond stone to thin the knife down a bit to the point where i can actually use the knife now.

what i was suprised by, but in retrospect i shouldn't be, was the rust i found on the tear down.

Thought I'd share this. Video is unfortunately not with English subs. Around min~3 you'll see the knifemaker produce a convex grind by fixing the blade into an apparatus that rocks vertically against the grinding wheel and putting pressure on it(all water cooled). The grinding machine is around 100 years old according to the narrator.

He also wears a metal ring to check the thickness of the grind by pressing the apex against it. You'll see the secondary bevel flex as he pushes the blade against the ring. Not sure if this is a thing in modern knifemaking anymore.

What i like about his video is not just the insane speed at which these guys accurately fillet the fish, but how sharp that knife is. you can see its just steeling a little bit every few fish to maintain a high level of cutting precision. which emphasizes my point about a simpler steel easily restored will let you go for a very long time without needing a real sharpening. i would love some time to be able to see a comparison of this level of skill with someone using a fillet knife from someone like Phil Wilson using the high hardness high carbide steels and see how they fare in this type of activity.

this is the primary fish i catch and fillet and when the knife is dull you start loosing a lot of meat. so there is no doubt in my mind that the knife is a good sharpness level
