Well, so far I find the Golden Stone and the Webfoot to be a very good traveling or EDC sharpening setup. Both together with the stand and their suede covers weigh as much as the Sharpmaker with the Medium and Fine rods, but is a lot more convenient because there are a lot fewer parts, and the Golden Stone and Webfoot stand on their own, even with the stand which is just used to adjust the angle, it is just a lot easier to use two stones that you rock back and forth for each side then to have to insert two different rods of two different grits, and the chance of dropping a semi-fragile ceramic rod is reduced, because the Golden Stone is a significant size and easy to hold on to. For home use, the Sharpmaker can be mounted to a board or a table and left there for ready use, which is very convenient for quick edge 'touch-ups'. All of the units can be angled to get a lower angle, but because of the radiused edges on the Golden Stone and the Webfoot, like the Profile rods have, so you can get a lot more angles available and also it makes matching the edge bevel angle of the knife a lot easier, which was a common thing on the Sharpmaker, but was made easier with the diamond and CBN rods. Anyhow, I have paired the Golden Stone and Webfoot with my Spyderco 701M Profile rod to make a more smoother grit progression, that the slight jump of the Webfoots 600 grit CBN and the Golden Stones F Ceramic. Another pairing I like is the Spyderco 306CBN Benchstone, with it's 400 grit and 800 grit, it makes a nice grit progression transition, and through in the 701M Profile, you have a complete sharpening progression at you disposal, and if you polish one side of the Golden Stone like I did with a #325 DMT Blue diamond plate, you will even have the UF Ceramic, for those that want a more polished edge.

UPDATE:

I just received the Spyderco 308CBN Webfoot as a gift. I can with a plastic stand that allows for a 15* sharpening angle vs the normal 20* of the Golden Stone and the Weboot. Total weight for both sharpening units and stand in their suede leather sheaths is 1.1lbs.

More to come, including pictures and videos, once I get some personal and family business taken care of.

This stone is something I had on my Amazon Wishlist for at least 5 years, probably more. I wanted a big cheap hardware-style stone to do gross material removal on, but this stone is a lot nicer than a cheap hardware stone. It is more like a TASK Garden Hone or a Norton Economy SiC stone. It is quite large, at 12" long, 2 1/2" wide, and 1 1/2" tall. I was able to do maintenance sharpening on seven kitchen knives in under 10 minutes. It is a combination stone, with a fairly coarse side, and a medium-to-fine fine side. At $10.50USD purchased price, it is a steal even at the current price of $15. More to come!
Did you have to cut away metal so that the adjustment wheel can move forward all the way without the wheel hitting?

I'm at that stage, and it appears my wheel has clearance, unlike what the CCC video shows.
Yeah, CCC should have the parts in stock now. I am planning to upgrade my machine step by step, the motor and variable speed will be the last thing I do. I like mine for regrinds and relief grinds, I usually use my Tormek T4 for sharpening or just sharpen by hand. An excellent coarse oil stone from Norton is about as fast as the grinder I have found. The grinder does do an awesome job at sharpening, especially if you have good belts. I use mine to shape the Kydex sheaths for the Victorinox Paring knife package I do.

That video by CCC is very helpful. I just bought one of these on sale and am following his steps on how to get it to run better.

I'm going to use it for sanding wood and occasionally try to sharpen very dull knives, or knives without a decent apex bevel with it. I sometimes sharpen kitchen knives for friends and family, and they have some budget kitchen knives that it would really be nice to quickly re-bevel.

I'm not ready to convert the motor over yet, though having one with variable speed would be very nice.

I have wanted a 3k Diamond plate for quite some time, ever since the late Ken Schwartz made a 3k Diamond plate for Michael Christy. The price was $10.99 on Amazon. I used it new out of the packaging, and it left a finish a little south of the DMT 8k Mesh (3u, ~4k-5k JIS). The diamond surface seemed uniform and set firm in the plate, unlike some cheap diamond hones I have gotten that shed the diamond surface pretty fast. All in all, not a bad deal for the price. The plate is very thin, so it needs to be placed in a stone holder or on a block to be used easily.

For simple steels, nothing really compares in efficiency to the Norton India line. Even a heavily damaged or butterknife-dull edge can be completely restored and sharpened in a minute or two. Cut the apex off, lean on it to shape it, cut the apex off again, and make some light passes at a slightly higher angle until it’s sharp enough. Much much faster than doing that with a diamond plate and with a diamond plate you can’t cut the apex off.

Also the fact that they don't strictly require the use of lubricants, so sharpening is a lot less messy.

Only thing, although I never tried really coarse plates like dmt extra-coarse, a freshly conditioned oilstone is really hard to match regarding cutting speed, talking about changing bevel angles and thinning here
Also the edges always seem to came up on the toothy side, never really a problem in my use though

After gifting my old Norton Economy 6" SiC stone to a friend, I decided to get a new one. I like to support local businesses as much as possible, but the hardware store I originally purchased my Norton Economy 6" SiC stone was out of them due to the supply issues everyone is currently having. I bought mine on Amazon and was pleasantly surprised to see that it was just like the Craftsman 6" stone I had bought from Sears years ago when they were still open. The Craftsman 6" stone was just like a Norton Crystolon stone, just shorter and thinner. The Norton Economy 6" SiC stone I had purchased was just like that, except branded as a Norton Economy UBP6. A great stone to have, and since there had been so many quality issues with the original batches of the Norton Economy 6" SiC stones(including mind), it is great to the quality top-notch now. Nothing remarkable otherwise, it is just a smaller, thinner version of the famous Norton Crystolon stone. As far as the Norton Economy 8" AlO stone, it is just a thinner version of the Norton Quickcut 8" AlO stone, and they both have the same product code (not the SKU#, that is different) which is UPB8. The 8" Economy and Quickcut are more like a hardware store stone, one that sheds grit(and is fine to use with water for lubrication) vs in the Norton India AlO stone, which has a hard, vitrified bonder. I would recommend any of these stones for sharpening and add the Norton India stones or the Wayne Goddard stones (Norton M Crystolon/F India) for everyday sharpening.
In addition to this 12" I also have a couple of Spanish 8" bastard cut files and a 6" smooth finishing file (Bellota brand, very common here in Italy, good performance).
Also a small selection of needle and chainsaw files.
About the use, as you said they are very handy for tools like axes, sickles, billhooks etc, they work faster than even the coarsest stones and overheating is never an issue. I usually follow up with a Sic stone for evening the scratch pattern though, almost never used a file only edge

I don't believe it's possible, because the blade was CA glued to a flat piece of steel, with only the edge exposed (very stable and quickly undone pouring some acetone on the joint). Sometimes a file stroke is not angled correctly and the teeth cannot cut cleanly, or the first couple of strokes slide on forging scale or dirt , but usually one can figure out how to make it work, adjusting the stroke direction and/or angle, in my case (especially on the Delica) the file was sliding a lot and the metal was deforming and burnishing instead of being cut, saving for the occasional tearing scratch on the softer stainless (hard corner of the file). Trying to file the spine, concentrating force on a very small surface, gave some result, but some of the file's teeth were reflecting light after a couple dozen passes. The fresh side of the file didn't impress me either.
Maybe I should have also tried a less coarse file, like a smooth cut, but I admit the result was a bit surprising.
I tried to find topics on many forums about filing hardened stainless, without much success, but
I know Stefan Wolf (Rip) once reground his spyderco salt using a file, I don't have any H1 steel knife, but I know for sure that steel doesn't have much carbide, if any at all.

Hello to all,
I've been a lurker on the old forum for a good while and I recently decided to join, thank you all.
I wanted to share with you my Stella Bianca bastard file, this model has a long cutting surface, very coarse teeth pattern, and according to the maker, is hardened to about 64 hrc.
I bought it after reading a topic on the old forum
http://www.cliffstamp.com/knives/forum/read.php?17,64834,64834][/url]
and I used it to reprofile a new Rinaldi hatchet, which only had a really thick and obtuse grind.
Even of fairly hard steel that dulled my previous file in an
heartbeat (silicon manganese tool steel, about 58hrc), it cut fast and clean, and in an hour or so I obtained a really nice cutting edge and a pile of perfect shavings, the file was still like new. In my limited experience, I've never seen a file working this good on hardened steel.
Next I used the file to regrind and thin a carbon steel Green River knife I handled from a blank a while ago, and it obviously worked perfectly fine on the even softer steel (54 to 56 according to the maker), but when I tried to do the same job on a Victorinox kitchen knife (stainless steel, about the same hardness AFAIK) the file started to skate and wasn't biting almost at all and the removal rate was poor.
I thought that maybe even minimal carbide content was enough to considerably slow down even the best files, simple testing done on similar hardness 12c27 (carbide volume and size more akin to simple carbon steel, the file hogged steel pretty weel compared to the similar but maybe more coarse grained X50CrMoV15) and on Spyderco VG10 (no bite at all) seems to confirm that.
That discovery was a bit of a bummer, but still a very good tool to manually reprofile any kind of carbon steel blade in my opinion, way faster than any stone I've ever had.

Yeah, I Spyderco video on how to use it would be awesome. I just covered the basics in my video. The main reason I really wanted the Golden Stone was that the edges were elliptic to match my Spyderco Profile Medium 701M stone I have. The new Duckfoot would add a coarse stone to the set, and it is a great set of stones to have as it can basically sharpen anything. In my video, I did go over the trick (as did Nick) to use the scissor mode of the Golden Stone to get a 12.5° angle. It would be awesome to see all the stuff the Golden Stone is capable of.

Nick is right. It does need a video. I was waiting for the CBN version and the 30 degree fixture. My goal for a complete .

Also, it's used for serrations just like the Triangle Sharpmaker where you just slowly run the serrated edge down the corner. I guess Nick doesn't know that trick? Though the Sharpmaker video does show how to do it.
