Spyderco Golden Stone 308F & Webfoot 308CBN

I got this the other day, mainly because Spyderco doesn't make the 701F Profile rod anymore, and to go along with my 701M Profile rod:

Shaped like a duck’s foot, the Golden Stone is a compact, versatile sharpening device that automatically sets the proper sharpening angle. Hold it by the narrow end and place the scalloped end on a flat surface. Tilting the stone from side to side creates a 20-degree sharpening angle on the outer edges of the stone. All you have to do is keep the plane of your blade vertical and draw the edge alternately along each side to sharpen. Other features allow easy sharpening of scissors, serrated edges, and pointed objects and its suede carry case also acts as a non-slip tabletop pad. The Golden Stone is easily cleaned with household cleanser, a scouring pad, and water.

Made in USA.

This is very handy sharpening tool. Not only does it have the eclipse/cat-eye edges of the 701 Profile stones, you can set it on its wide side length-wise and set a 20* edge/micro-bevel. Lay it on it's edge horizontal, and you get a 12.5* angle. Nick Shabazz's video does an excellent review of this product also:

Well, so far I find the Golden Stone and the Webfoot to be a very good traveling or EDC sharpening setup. Both together with the stand and their suede covers weigh as much as the Sharpmaker with the Medium and Fine rods, but is a lot more convenient because there are a lot fewer parts, and the Golden Stone and Webfoot stand on their own, even with the stand which is just used to adjust the angle, it is just a lot easier to use two stones that you rock back and forth for each side then to have to insert two different rods of two different grits, and the chance of dropping a semi-fragile ceramic rod is reduced, because the Golden Stone is a significant size and easy to hold on to. For home use, the Sharpmaker can be mounted to a board or a table and left there for ready use, which is very convenient for quick edge 'touch-ups'. All of the units can be angled to get a lower angle, but because of the radiused edges on the Golden Stone and the Webfoot, like the Profile rods have, so you can get a lot more angles available and also it makes matching the edge bevel angle of the knife a lot easier, which was a common thing on the Sharpmaker, but was made easier with the diamond and CBN rods. Anyhow, I have paired the Golden Stone and Webfoot with my Spyderco 701M Profile rod to make a more smoother grit progression, that the slight jump of the Webfoots 600 grit CBN and the Golden Stones F Ceramic. Another pairing I like is the Spyderco 306CBN Benchstone, with it's 400 grit and 800 grit, it makes a nice grit progression transition, and through in the 701M Profile, you have a complete sharpening progression at you disposal, and if you polish one side of the Golden Stone like I did with a #325 DMT Blue diamond plate, you will even have the UF Ceramic, for those that want a more polished edge.

UPDATE:

I just received the Spyderco 308CBN Webfoot as a gift. I can with a plastic stand that allows for a 15* sharpening angle vs the normal 20* of the Golden Stone and the Weboot. Total weight for both sharpening units and stand in their suede leather sheaths is 1.1lbs.

More to come, including pictures and videos, once I get some personal and family business taken care of.

sal,
Yeah, I Spyderco video on how to use it would be awesome. I just covered the basics in my video. The main reason I really wanted the Golden Stone was that the edges were elliptic to match my Spyderco Profile Medium 701M stone I have. The new Duckfoot would add a coarse stone to the set, and it is a great set of stones to have as it can basically sharpen anything. In my video, I did go over the trick (as did Nick) to use the scissor mode of the Golden Stone to get a 12.5° angle. It would be awesome to see all the stuff the Golden Stone is capable of.

Nick is right. It does need a video. I was waiting for the CBN version and the 30 degree fixture. My goal for a complete .

Also, it's used for serrations just like the Triangle Sharpmaker where you just slowly run the serrated edge down the corner. I guess Nick doesn't know that trick? Though the Sharpmaker video does show how to do it.
